About Behind Your Bill

Created by Paul Kim, Behind Your Bill is a public education project about everyday household costs. The goal is to make complicated systems understandable, so you can ask better questions and make more informed choices.
Sources, evidence and uncertainty
Our approach is to link to original sources, explain assumptions and distinguish evidence from interpretation. Diagrams show relationships; they do not measure each factor’s effect unless explicitly stated. Examples and calculators are labeled when their numbers are hypothetical.
Policy, choices and tradeoffs
We examine what households, businesses and governments can influence. A policy may lower one person’s payment while shifting costs elsewhere. We aim to explain who benefits, who bears the cost, how long a change may take, and what remains uncertain.
Updates and calculator privacy
Guides display when their sources were reviewed. As the collection develops, substantive corrections will be dated and described on the affected guide. The gasoline and healthcare calculators run in your browser; the site does not send your entered values to a server.
